Short Biography

Dr. Muppala received the Ph. D. degree in Electrical Engineering from Duke University, Durham, NC in 1991, the M. S. degree in Computer Engineering from The Center for Advanced Computer Studies,University of Southwestern Louisiana (now University of Louisiana at Lafayette), Lafayette, LA in 1987 and the B. E. degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India in 1985.

He is currently an associate professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering,The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, Clear Water Bay, Kowloon, Hong Kong. He is also currently serving as the program director for the Master of Science in Information Technology (MSc(IT)) program. He also served as the Undergraduate Studies Director in the Computer Science Department for two years from Aug. 1999 to Aug. 2001, and the Chair of Facilities Committee in the department from Sep. 2005 to Aug. 2007.

He was previously a Member of the Technical Staff at Software Productivity Consortium (Herndon, Virginia, USA) from 1991 to 1992, where he was involved in the development of modeling techniques for systems and software. While at Duke University, he participated in the development of two modeling tools, the Stochastic Petri Net Package (SPNP) and the symbolic Hierarchical Automated Reliability and Performance Evaluator (SHARPE), both of which are being used in several universities and industry in the USA. (If you are interested in these packages, please contact Prof. Kishor Trivedi)

He co-founded the International Workshop on Dependability of Clouds, Data Centers and Virtual Machine Technology (DCDV). He was also the program co-chair for the 1999 Pacific Rim International Symposium on Dependable Computing held in Hong Kong in December 1999. He also co-founded and organized The 1st Asia-Pacific Workshop on Embedded System Education and Research (APESER). He has also served on program committees of many international conferences.

He received the Excellence in Teaching Innovation Award 2007. He was also awarded the Teaching Excellence Appreciation Award by the Dean of Engineering, HKUST.

Dr. Muppala is a Senior Member of IEEE, IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Communications Society, and a participating representative from HKUST with EDUCAUSE.
