  3. Project Title: A Personalized E-Learning Platform (COMPLETED)
Project Code: HKUST-MIT Research Alliance Consortium Project
    Schedule: 2016/07/01 - 2018/06/30
Description: The long-term goal of our R&D mission is to significantly improve the learning effectiveness of learners on e-learning platforms through personalization, as opposed to the traditional one-size-fits-all approach. To achieve this goal, our project will consist of three major components: modeling a student's learning profile; continual assessment with an aim at identifying the areas of and reasons for any underperformance; and recommending personalized remedial learning activities.
Collaborator: Prof. D. Y. Yeung (principal investigator), Prof. T. C. Pong, Prof. Raymond Wong, CS Department of HKUST.
    Research Assistants: Yingke Zhu

  4. Project Title: Articulation Screening and Training Tool (COMPLETED)
    Project Code: OGCIO Project
    Schedule: 2014/09/01 - 2016/06/30
Description: To develop a mobile Android App to help local hearing-impaired people learn the articulation of Cantonese consonants.
    Collaborator: The Hong Kong Society for the Deaf; Dr. Kam Tim WOO, ECE Department of HKUST;
Dr. Albert WONG, ECE Department of HKUST.
Research Assistants: Dongpeng CHEN, Yingke ZHU.

  5. Project Title: Extending GONG for the Support of Teaching Speech Recognition (COMPLETED)
    Project Code: HKUST-1-AQ
    Schedule: 2005/01/01 - 2005/12/31
Description: This projects intends to enhance the Gong system (previously developed by the co-investigator) to support the tuition of speech recognition so that speech segmentation techniques may be effectively taught to students.
Collaborator: Dr. David Rossiter, CS Department of HKUST.
    Research Assistants: Gibson LAM

  6. Project Title: Use Speech Recognition and Multi-media Technologies to Teach Oral English (COMPLETED)
Project Code: UGC Interface Projects 2000
    Schedule: 2001/9/1 - 2003/10/31
Description: In this project, we will develop a multi-media tool that uses state-of-the-art speech processing technologies for teaching secondary school students spoken English communication skills. The proposed learning tool will focus on enhancing four different aspects of the students' English communication skill, namely, pronunciation, intonation, vocabulary and expressions.
Collaborator (Principal Investigator): Dr. Manhung Siu, EEE Department of HKUST.
Research Assistants: Mimi NG, Jimmy FUNG, LI Chak Fai, CHAN Siu Man, Tim NG

  7. Project Title: A Passenger Route Guidance System for Multi-modal Public Transport Network (COMPLETED)
    Project Code: SSRI01/02.EG06
    Schedule: 2002/7/1 - 2004/6/30
Description: This project will develop an online passenger pre-trip route planning or en-route guidance system in a multi-modal public transport network. This system will take advantage of the Transportation Information System (TIS) to be developed by the Transport Department, which is a database that centralizes the collection and processing of comprehensive transport information including traffic conditions, progress of road works, traffic diversion measures, public transport services, and traffic accidents.
Collaborator (Principal Investigator): Dr. Hong Kam LO, Department of Civil Engineering in HKUST.
Research Assistants: Alan CHAN, Roger HSIAO

    Project Code: SSRI99/00.EG06
    Schedule: 2000/7/1 - 2003/06/30
Description: In this project, we propose to apply recent advances in human language technologies to build a Communicator between people speaking Cantonese and Putonghua. The communicator will employ state-of-the-art technologies in speech recognition, machine translation, and speech synthesis to translate spoken Cantonese to Putonghua and vice versa.
Collaborator: Dr. Manhung Siu, EEE Department of HKUST.
    Research Assistants: Tim NG

  9. Project Title: Development of Acoustic and Articulatory Models to Recognize Speech (COMPLETED)
    Project Code: ASTRI 001.01/02
    Schedule: 2001/11/1 - 2003/1/31
Description: The project is funded by ASTRI to develop a web-based pronunciation learning tool to teach kids of age 9-11 English pronunciation. Besides our PLASER (Pronunciation Learning via Automatic SpEech Recognition) technology, articulatory acoustic modeling will also be employed to enhance speech recognition accuracy.

  10. Project Title: Effective Learning of English Pronunciation via Speech Recognition Technology (COMPLETED)
    Project Code: QEF99/00.EG01
    Schedule: 2000/7/1 - 2002/10/31
Description: This project investigates how to apply Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) technology to teaching English pronunciation in the school environment. In the course, we will develop a multimedia teaching and self-learning tool called "PLASER" (Pronunciation Learning via Automatic SpEech Recognition) through which students may learn English pronunciations at their own pace in class or after school with reduced supervision. With the ASR technology, PLASER can tell if a student says an English word correctly, and if he or she does not, exactly where the student is wrong. The project demands advanced techniques in acoustic modeling, garbage rejection, language modeling, and noise robustness. (video)
