BIOGRAPHY

I received B.Sc. from Tsinghua University, China, and MSc and PhD from the Department of Computer Science, University of Wisconsin-Madison . Before joining HKUST, I worked  as an engineer in Chinese Academy of Space Technology , and a principal research scientist in the Computer Science Center of Honeywell Inc., Minnesota, USA (1985-1987), and a professor at the School of Computing of the National University of Singapore  (1987-2000).

My research interests are in data/knowledge base management systems with emphasis on query processing and optimization, physical database design and database performance. My recent research work includes data quality, data warehousing and data mining, and management of XML data. I am also interested in development of Internet-based database applications and electronic business systems.

I am currently a trustee of the VLDB Endowment, an associate editor of IEEE Transactions on Knowledge and Data Engineering (TKDE). I am the chair of the steering committee of the International Conference on Web-Age Information Management (WAIM), and have been the co-chair (1998-2001) and chair (2001-2003) of the steering committee of Pacific-Asia Conference of Knowledge Discovery and Data Mining (PAKDD). From 1998-2002, I served as a member of the ACM SIGMOD Advisory Board (1998-2002).

For 2004, I am the conference chair for APWeb 2004, a PC co-chair for ER 2004, and a PC member for VLDB2004, SIGMOD2004, SIGKDD2004, etc.  I am also a panel co-chair for ICDE05.
