A Survey on Augmented Reality with Interactive Data Visualization

PhD Qualifying Examination

Title: "A Survey on Augmented Reality with Interactive Data Visualization"

by

Mr. Wai TONG

Abstract:

Augmented Reality (AR) brings extra digital information to the physical
environment through information visualization, enhancing people's lives in
various areas, such as 3D navigation, in-situ education, and
entertainment. Among all kinds of digital information, data becomes one of
the most valuable information that humans need to access exploration and
decision making in the Big Data era. As such, there is a growing body of
research investigating how AR and data visualization techniques can be
combined to empower people to access and utilize big data. This survey
explores the opportunities and challenges AR brings to data visualization
based on recent studies following the data visualization pipeline:
presentation, interaction, and application. It first reports novel AR
techniques in presenting data visualizations. Then, interaction techniques
are reviewed to study how people can interact with data visualization in
the AR environment. Further, potential AR data visualization applications,
for instance, situated visualization, situated analytics, and co-located
collaborative analytics, are summarized and discussed. Finally, the survey
is concluded with unsolved challenges, which could hopefully motivate
future research in AR data visualization.
