Abstract:

Researchers have discovered that different musical instruments possess distinct
emotional qualities within their audio features. Bowed string and sustaining
instruments, renowned for their evocative abilities, have been found to convey
a range of emotions that can be influenced by variations in pitch and dynamics.
However, the intricate relationship between timbre, pitch, dynamics, and the
emotional characteristics of instruments remains largely unexplored. This
survey paper seeks to bridge this knowledge gap by investigating the interplay
between music emotion and features in bowed string instruments, with a specific
focus on the violin and erhu. Additionally, this survey aims to shed light on
how cultural differences impact these emotions, unveiling intriguing insights
into the emotional aspects of these instruments.
