Ting-Chuen PONG (PhD, Virginia Tech, 1984)

Professor of Computer Science and Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs

Dr. Pong received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1984. In 1991, he joined the Hong Kong University of Science & Technology, where he is currently a Professor in Computer Science, Associate Vice-President for Academic Affairs, and Director of the Mainland Students and Programs Office. He has served as Associate Dean of Engineering from 1999 to 2002 and Director of the Sino Software Research Institute at HKUST from 1995 to 2000. Before joining HKUST, he was an Associate Professor in Computer Science at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, USA. Dr. Pong is a recipient of the HKUST Excellence in Teaching Innovation Award in 2001.

Dr. Pong's research interests include computer vision, pattern recognition, multimedia computer and IT in Education. Dr. Pong is a recipient of the Annual Pattern Recognition Society Award in 1990. He has served as Program Co-Chair of the Web and Education track of the Tenth International World Wide Web Conference in 2001, the Third International Computer Science Conference in 1995 and the Third Asian Conference on Computer Vision in 1998.

Research interests:

Computer vision and image processing; artificial intelligence; pattern recognition; IT in Education.
