History of the Orthodox Church in India

Organizations

Since 1992, the Philanthropic Organization known as the Philanthropic Society of the Orthodox Church, has been officially recognized by the government of West Bengal. Its purpose is to help people regardless of faith tradition. For this reason, there have been founded three health centers where medical care is offered free of charge, two schools, and under construction there are two medical centers and an orphanage which will house 150 needy children.

There is food distribution to 350 needy families every week, and a daily breakfast offered to 120 children of the Kalighat area. Among other tasks, the Philanthropic Society visits public schools, orphanages, and villages which flood during the monsoon season in order to distribute food, clothes, school and medical supples.
